Party Night

Launch day patch notes: a clubhouse, a new look and 40-second minigames

· 8 min read · news patch notes devlog

Party Night went live this morning. Within hours the first players had found the bugs we missed, the minigames that dragged on and the bots that aimed like accountants with a grudge. So we spent the rest of the day fixing things, live, while people played. More than 80 changes later, here is everything that is new tonight.

The new clubhouse front page: an arcade hall with game cabinets, a dance floor and players chatting

Welcome to the clubhouse

The front page is no longer a menu. It is a place. When you open Party Night you arrive in the clubhouse as your own character, next to everyone else who is online, and you can simply walk around.

  • The Arcade is the main hall: cabinets for the minigames, a dance floor, a football goal and a trampoline that works better with friends.
  • The Playground has target dummies to practise on and a small flock of chickens. The chickens do nothing useful. We love them anyway.
  • Choose a game has three doors: Party shuffle (the board with minigames), Straight to chaos (quick minigames, no board) and Play with friends (start a private party or type a code).

You get a friendly guest name straight away (there are 400 combinations, from Peppy Turnip to Toasty Pretzel), so you can play without typing anything. The big Play now button is the fastest way in: it drops you into a quick party of 5 minigames back to back, no board. And if you stand around for a bit while a public lobby has people in it, a small prompt offers to take you there.

Your lobby is a room too: the departure lounge, where the party gathers in front of a big golden door before the first game.

A whole new look

Everything you see has been redrawn in an illustrated style: the characters, their hats, wings, pets and gear, every arena, the board, the game items, the menus and the wardrobe. There is a new rounded typeface to match. The characters still fall into pits exactly as often. They just look better doing it.

Cosmetics are still purely cosmetic. A crown does not make your hitbox bigger, and a chicken costume does not make it smaller.

Minigames now last about 40 seconds

The loudest play-test feedback was simple: 60 seconds is too long. Nobody wants to spend a whole minute losing at something. Every minigame now runs roughly 35 to 45 seconds once the countdown ends. Games with rounds lost a round or two instead of having their last one chopped off halfway, and Party Football got goals a third wider, so a 40-second match still has goals in it (goalless games went from one in three to about one in seven).

Floor Is Debt in the illustrated style: dark pits where the floor has fallen away, and ghosts of knocked-out players

Floor Is Debt, the game this all started with, got two fixes of its own. The holes are now real dark pits, because on the new floor they were too easy to miss (and then far too easy to fall into). And a round no longer fizzles out in a draw when the timer runs out: after 45 seconds the floor starts crumbling in from the edges, SUDDEN DEATH, until the last player drops.

Game by game

Snake Feast: six snakes in a green arena full of glowing orbs, with live scores along the top

  • Snake Feast now plays like snake.io. Eat glowing orbs to grow, never touch another snake with your head, and hold Space (or Boost on a phone) to speed up at the cost of some length. Crash and you burst into orbs for everyone else. The edges wrap round, so running off one side brings you back on the other.
  • Tug of War throws a twist at you every few seconds: Slip, Mud (one puller gets stuck), Tempo up and Slow down, Crowd surge and Gold rush. It also has bomb beats now. When the lane turns red, do not press. Seriously.
  • Bumper Cars steers much more snappily, has two pits in the middle of the rink and spiked corners, so nobody can hide in one for the whole game.
  • Musical Chairs lets you shove rivals at any time, not only when the music stops.
  • Whack-an-Auditor is easier to hit: a longer reach, auditors stay up longer and a miss recovers faster.
  • Fish Frenzy has a hook window twice as long (0.8 seconds). The old one was shorter than a human reaction plus the internet.
  • Penthouse: walking into someone now actually pushes them.
  • And under the hood: a very quick tap now always counts. Before, a press and release that fell between two server updates could vanish, which made the timing games feel dead.

Bots that play like people

Bots used to aim like robots, mostly because they were robots. Now every bot at the table gets its own skill level each party: slower reactions, wobbly aim, a moment of hesitation, a fumbled button. In Meat Grinder every bot used to hit 34% of its shots. Now they range from 14% to 26%, and the sloppy ones fire a lot less.

Room settings in the departure lounge, with the new Bot skill option under Bots to add

The host picks the range in the room settings under Bot skill: Easy, Mixed (the default, from clumsy to sharp) or Hard, for when you want a proper fight.

Chaos you cannot miss

Chaos modifiers like Ice floor and Big heads were easy to miss if you blinked during the briefing. Now every minigame with chaos opens with a big CHAOS! (or DOUBLE CHAOS!) splash under the countdown, one card per modifier, and a sting you will learn to fear. The badge in the match bar keeps pulsing for the first seconds of play, and Ice floor is finally visible: ice shards fly up from your feet, and skid marks show exactly where you failed to stop.

The countdown splash: DOUBLE CHAOS! with cards for Big heads and Ice floor over Whack-an-Auditor

We also removed Mirrored controls. It was not chaos. It was just sad.

Starting a party without the waiting

Everyone knows the lobby where one person never presses Ready. Two fixes:

  • The host can press 🔔 Ask everyone to get ready. Anyone who is not ready gets a banner, a chime, a shaking Ready button, a buzz on their phone and a blinking tab if they wandered off to another one.
  • The host can simply press Start the party. If some guests are still not ready, the party starts anyway after a 15-second countdown, and they get a big "I'm ready!" button in the meantime. The host can cancel it, and it starts at once as soon as the last person readies up.

A guest's view of the lobby: the party starts in 13 seconds, with a big I'm ready! button

The front page also shows how busy it is right now: how many people are online and how many lobbies are open.

Talk to each other

  • Text chat is here: in the clubhouse with everyone who is there, and in your room (lobby, board and results; it tucks away while a minigame runs). There are quick phrases for the lazy, and you can click a name to mute someone. The filter is on by default and stars out swearing. Slurs, hate, links and phone numbers are blocked for everyone, whatever the setting.
  • Voice chat in the clubhouse works by distance: people standing near you sound loud, people across the room fade out, and people in another room are silent.
  • Voice stays on. Once you switch it on, it stays on for the night: after a reload, when you join a room, and when you come back to the clubhouse.
  • Friends now show where they are (In the clubhouse, In lobby, Playing and so on), with online friends at the top. You can add someone as a friend straight from their player card in the clubhouse.

Live scores and your vote

On a computer you now see live scores for everyone in a strip under the match bar, not only your own. And after every minigame, the people who played it get one question: Did you like this minigame? 👍 👎

Please vote. Every thumb ends up on our dashboard, and it is how we decide which games get more love next.

Sign in with Google (optional)

You can still play as a guest, no account needed. If you want to keep your level, outfits and collection on another device, tap Sign in under your name at the top of the screen and link a Google account. The welcome screen shows your name once you are signed in, and the privacy page explains exactly what we store (not much).

Smaller things that make a difference

  • Party Night now speaks six languages: English, Nederlands, Deutsch, Français, Español and Português, and so does this blog.
  • The language offer no longer sits on top of the game where one stray tap could reload your match, and switching language keeps your seat.
  • Opening a crate now spins a proper reel that ticks as it slows down and lands on your prize with a satisfying thunk. Tap to skip it if you are impatient.
  • If we ever need to restart the server, a banner tells you first, and matches that are already running get to finish.

And all of it on your phone

Everything above works on phones too: the clubhouse, chat, voice, and touch controls for every minigame.

Three phone screens: Snake Feast with a Steer stick and a Boost button, the chaos splash, and Floor Is Debt with Move, Aim and Jump controls

Thanks to everyone who played on day one and told us what felt wrong. If you missed the start, Party Night is live explains the basics, and 23 new minigames has the full lineup. Keep the votes coming.
